Domain name registration
Hints and tips on how to choose a domain name
Pick a good one!
Goes without saying doesn't it.
Pick one someone else isn't using
When you're looking for a domain name it can be frustrating as it appears that all the names are taken, not just the good ones! Well, as it happens a lot of domains are "parked". That means that no one is really using them just that some enterprising sort (scumbag if you will) has registered in the hope of get their hands on a little more of your cash than you'd like them to have.
Unless the domain infringes your intellectual property rights, think trademark and copyright, then you pretty much have to stump up or slump off.
When you've chosen your domain a quick thought about your email address is a good idea ...
Email address choice
When deciding on what you want to call yourself in your email address you should consider the following points:
- Customer perception – do you want to look like a bigger company, in which case having sales@, admin@, support@, bookings@ etc. can give the appearance of a larger group. Don't worry all the emails can be sent to the same email box.
- Put a name to it – customers may feel more comfortable contacting a person by name. You should be careful though as this can mean that the wrong person gets contacted with an enquiry (e.g. sales people get support enquiries). Also consider how often staff leave. It may be better to have an admin@ type address than to tell your customer that the email address has changed again!
- Catch-all addresses – these can be configured to receive any email sent with the ending @your-company.name. This can be useful, e.g. to catch email with misspelled addresses (though a sender would get a warning about this usually), or to ease administration as it effectively gives you chance to use unlimited email addresses all going to one email box. However, it does open you up to receive possibly thousands more spam emails which can clog up the server and cause increased email administration overheads for your staff.
- Say it loud – how will it sound when you tell someone your address. Will it be easy to remember, easy to understand over the telephone? For example a new web user may think that mrsdotty@example.com was misses.e@example.com.
